Toxic Materials Library: PCBs

PCBs are Dangerous Carcinogens

Where Is It Found?
PCBs are a group of manufactured chemicals that are colourless or light yellow oily liquids or solids that have no smell or taste used widely in:
  • “Closed systems” such as coolants, lubricants, ingredients in the manufacture of heat transfer fluids, hydraulic fluids, dyes, and electrical equipment such as capacitors, light ballasts, and transformers.
  • “Open system” products such as caulking and sealing components around windows in masonry buildings, carbonless copy paper, paints, and adhesives used in schools and buildings constructed in the 1960’s and 1970’s.
Why Is It A Dangerous Toxin?
PCBs pose a significant threat to human health and the environment. By the late 1970’s, PCBs were identified as potential human carcinogens and developmental toxins that have harmful effects on human organs, particularly the skin, kidneys, and lungs, as well as the human reproductive and immune systems. PCB production was banned in the late 1970’s; however, PCBs persist in our environment and our buildings because they do not break down easily and are difficult to destroy.

What Can I Do?
The contribution of PCBs to the human body from living and working in PCB- contaminated buildings is largely unrecognized. Managing the risk including removing potential PCB-contaminated materials which could include:
  • Replacing older fluorescent lights that contain transformers or ballasts that could contain PCBs. Should the ballasts fail, PCBs can leak out and contaminate exposed surfaces and the air.
  • Replacing submersible pumps in private wells if PCB-containing oils were suspected in their manufacture. Should these pumps fail, the PCB-contaminated oils can leak out into the drinking water.
Our qualified staff at Reitzel Bros. Environmental can help you to determine if your buildings contain PCBs, assess the risk, select the most appropriate method of managing the problem, and perform the abatement operation — be it removal and disposal or encapsulation.
